dechirer decipher

all images are from the mutina dechirer product catalogue

I originally thought the name of this tile was decipher, which I though was apt as there were so many layers to decipher in this tile! You could look at it for hours and uncover different stories!

But it is actually called dechirer. It is a French term that means to tear or rip, to split into parts ... to tear apart. The tiles do look like layers of many different parts, designed by the very talented Patrica Urquiola for Mutina.

Patrica Urquiola in front of one of the tiles - love the large format!

And now just lots and lots of lovely images!

a chalk prototype of the tile

the range also includes a plain and mosaic tile

just beautiful!

And to end a few inspirational words from Partrica Urquiolo (taken from the dechirer product catalogue).

On the design:
"... I'm also fascinated by the idea of creating an industrial product in which traces of the layers of history are present, a product with a personality. Bas-reliefs of different heights which are not so much decorations as the remains of torn away memories."

And on life and design (I think we can all relate!):
"The creative process is more than just a job, it's an integral part of my existence. It's something I carry within me, together with the other most important things in my life: my family, friends, books, art, travels. It's a part of the whole that is me."

  1. They're gorgeous! I wonder what they feel like to the touch. They look kind of matt and rough-ish. Not a criticism - I like the chalky look. (I see she does the prototype in chalk - such a good idea!)

  2. Doesn't the prototype look fantastic! It's a great texture, I think the hexagon is my fav!
